Unloomed #1: An Installation for Strings and Certain Sketchy Objects of String Theory

This January 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗽 and 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝟮𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 present 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱 an interdisciplinary collaboration as part of the annual winter festival of lights organized by 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝟮𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 in the Amstelpark.

Located in the 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘂𝗶𝘀 in the middle of the Amstelpark, the performances and installation are a result of the collaboration of three artist and performers groups. As a new way to present and experience art during a lockdown, the installation and performance will be quarantined and locked behind the windows, while the public can safely roam free around the glass box in the open quiet space of the park. A light and string installation inside the Glazen Huis creates a changing visual landscape of moving shapes, while the string construction is being played by musicians, generating a sound concert for the audience standing outside…

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 focuses on processing artworks exclusively via working in opposition, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢 to one another. This results in three active groups that work separately, along specific “lines”, to create a visual installation that serves different purposes for each group, while forming a whole new phenomenon when performing together and blending their separate lines. The Contra aspect of this band of outsiders will seem evident in the performance but in the installation, the work will become completely integrated as a whole. 𝙐𝙣𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙙 refers to the groups that do not work together in the interwoven way as the 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗽’𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭 that will be centered around the concepts looming and weaving as the symbolization of collaboration.

String Theory
The framework in which the Unloomed Glazenhuis performances will be developed is 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺. String Theory is derived from physics and refers to particles that are replaced by one-dimensional objects called strings. String Theory describes how strings propagate through space and interact with each other, and will function as an inspiration for the artists to produce visible and audible interaction.

The following groups will participate:
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙤 𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙤 which works entirely with non-musical objects for the creation of music installations and performances and includes 𝘈𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴, 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘤𝘰 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘺, 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘬 𝘉𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘮𝘢, 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘩, 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘏𝘶𝘭𝘻𝘦𝘯 and 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘸. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨’ 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 creates audiovisual performances with optics, multiple projections, lasers, and layered soundtracks usually against a complex spatial arrangement and includes 𝘝𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘳 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘰𝘷 and 𝘖𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘈𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘺. 𝙍𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙚 is a group devoted to radio sound art installation and will be installing radio frequencies in and around the Glazenhuis, creating a relationship between sound and the architectural terrain. The “strings” will be extended outside the space into a feedback zone surrounding the building which can be explored by spectators by moving around the building.

*all corona-measurements will be met. Come in groups of max. 2 people to the park or with a household.

Saturday 12 December 2020 20:00 – 22:00
For the final event of the 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙢𝙣 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣, we contemplate an event horizon of distant futures, micro bacterial evolutions, questions of human hubris sustainability, and the appearing and disappearing acts of time and space. These last three projects, though they spiral off in disparate directions make us consider the discreet values, the most human-scale definition of the term 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮, that underpin our cultures and our connections within them.

Here we confront another future made more salient in the moment of the pandemic. Visual artist 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘵𝘪 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘻 will perform a live transmission from a wet lab in a desolate spot in Finland to introduce 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙖 with Cyanobacteria and other space-related macros/microbial beings, with additional interactive material drawn from human and other than human lifeforms. Tenetz contemplates this microbial cinema with a view towards the possible alternate futures of the biosphere. He presents harsh environments reflected through radiating live bio-materials transformed into audio and visual signals. Technospheric records of data and visuals are developed through machine learning.

Thus, the approach to composition is from an architectural, spatial perspective. Visual and sonic elements are designed and positioned in close relation and interaction with the performance space. The static architectural characters get accentuated and extended by the ephemeral audiovisual elements, entangling in an immersive play of structure, light, and sound. The minimal architectural character of the Kunstkapel invites an equally minimal design of visual and sonic elements. 4 light projectors will be used: wash-beam moving headlamps, able to scan the space in all directions with powerful light beams morphing from tight focus to wide washes. The beams will create dynamic, immersive light structures complementing the static architecture. Sound will be generated using rhythmic pattern synthesizers with a cyclical nature reminiscent of the space’s shape.

The fourth event of our 𝘼𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙢𝙣 𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 is devoted to the quanta that make up imagery which remains at the edges of human consciousness. These quanta insistently disturb our sleep in their slow and inexorable emergence into our thought patterns and our shifting mental landscapes. These are the undercurrencies that gradually redefine our perception and our orientation in space. We now occupy a decisively changed environment before we have barely begun to notice it.

A battery of projection operations produces a meditation on visual stimulus and the recurrence of unconscious images and operations spawned in the time of Covid. A system of feedbacking programs creates sudden jolts that briefly pin shadows to the walls as another form of contact tracing while unsettling reminders and insistent recurrences may be dimly absorbed.

AUTUMN QUANTA I: CONSULT THE DUST Saturday, 3 October, 2020

The Warp returns for a new season of multimedia performance events in the Kunstkapel. After a summer break Contraband in Company will present CRAWLSPACE OF HEADROOM.The individual artists of the Spring Quandary are reassembled in new ensembles researching the function of the actual building as an instrument and as raw material. Utilizing the architectural structure in many surprising ways, the artists will play the 360º Kunstkapel in a way that is unseen.

The following artists will collaborate in site-specific ensembles:

The Ensemble Todo Modo: Dirk Bruinsma , Robbert Van Hulzenand Christian Smith will create music from the existing architecture in the building with the performance ‘Rafters in the Void’.

The Afterwords Searchparty: Anthony Murell, Lise Brenner will combine spoken word and interactive visuals, called ‘The Layers Beneath‘.

The Supernumeraries: Stefania Petroula, Izabella Pacewicz Wysocka and Manuela Lucia Tessi will perform ‘Intruders’, an investigative work for movement.

The Fold: Performs A Variable Meridian/Fractal Divisions by Andreas Tegenader, Max van der Wal, a work in which live coding, photogrammetry and system feedback loop are used to restructure the Kunstkapel architecture.

The Binding Co-Morbidities: the intervention in space ‘A PRIMER effects‘ will provide an environment in which performers and audience can interact in a corona conscious environment.

The Alternating Current performs Litmus, a live surveillance camera feedback work.

An Audio Visual Spatial Interpretation of the Pandemic from Ancient Inspirations

The Pitfall Ensemble performs De Rerum Natura: Plague Music (Moving Image Scores). The Pitfall Ensemble is devoted to unusual scores, arrangements for spatially deployed music and site specific locations for performance. Pitfall now creates an annex for its original undertaking of creating a music work derived from Lucretius’ latin poem about scientific observations: De Rerum Natura (“On the Nature of Things”).
The last pages of De Rerum Ranta describes the plague as the natural end of humankind.

For this annex, The Pitfall Ensemble invites visual artists and its own members to develop visual motion scores which will be projected as a means for the ensemble to interpret the moving images. Three very different approaches to plague music in the 360º Kunstkapel will be the result. Featuring: Miriam den boer, Dirk Bruinsma, Maripepa Contreras, George Dumitriu, Lucija Gregov, Jan Willem van der Ham, Mary Oliver, Salvoandrea Lucifora, Aaron Lumley, Pau Sola Masafrets, Camille Verhaak and Rogier Hornman. With compositions by Dirk Bruinsma, Marit Shalem and by Andreas Tegnander and Max van der Wal.

The Afterwords Searchparty featuring Anthony Murrell and Lise Brenner will explore and atomize the work of Lucretius with visual interpolations in the performance Atomizing Terms for De Rerum Natura VI.

Surface to Volume performs The Quantum Entanglements & Figures. This group is frequently concentrated on the infinitesimal in its attempt to derive a different dynamic for visual music and hidden drama. Presented here as a preamble is a brief index of motifs to be featured in a sprawling if appropriately minuscule project.

Limited place for 30 guests
Tickets are €10 cash at the door | €5 for students

Corona measurements are met: the audience will be seated at appropriate distance and will be requested to wear a face mask.

LIVE from the Kunstkapel / Fundamental Fysiks Group Reconnoiter Probe Submissions for Remote Viewing

The third event of the Autumn Quanta 2020 program is a live-streamed conference with 3 artistic interpretations of quantum physics.

This event is inspired by the Fundamental Fysiks Group that brought the San Fransisco Bay Area in the ’70s a new resurgence in the pursuit of resonant ideas in quantum physics which further led to the development of quantum information.

Styled as a conference, each performing unit has put forward an audio-visual essay, an art piece that is the exposition of an idea and a contribution to the theme of Remote Views that was established by the Fundamental Fysiks Group.

Streamed live as a computer coded audiovisual conference of non-locality quantum entanglement, the following particles will reach you at home:

The Self Similars performs Fractal Breakdowns – 5min

The Self Similars is a group devoted to charting quantum information data through Fractal Imaging. Fractal Imaging is a unique way of compressing and storing images in which mathematics has unlocked the door of restrictions of conventional imaging technology and created an important intersection of art and science. In this work, variant disciplines and data chains are merged, with each time producing a new series of rendered point clouds.

Alice & Bob While Steering performs Notes on Nonlocality – 1h30

In everyday life, distance and location are felt as daily absolute truths. Yet physics now suggests that at the most fundamental level, the universe is nonlocal – there is no such thing as place or distance. Albert Einstein’s general relativity instead ascribed gravity to the curvature of spacetime. It introduced a deeper sense of non-locality by showing that spacetime positions have no intrinsic meaning. In ‘Notes on Nonlocality’ the irrationality of infinite numbers is observed, by examining large sound samples derived from audiorate granular synthesis and visuals produced by transforming real-life imagery on the smallest scale, into initial states for a recursive cellular automaton system.

No Clone Wrestlers perform Emergences Thru Probability Amplitudes – 4min

A probability amplitude is a complex number used in describing the behavior of systems. They provide a wave function and the results of observationys of that system through emergences. Emergences indicate that small changes create big differences. In this piece, we observe how the small scale shapes the grand, with visuals created through continuous pixel movement and morphs in which the whole system symbiotically reacts to the audio.

All works are produced by Andreas Aalberg Tegnander and Max van der Wal.

Diamond Sutra Factory Workshop

The Congress of Glassolallia IV
Continuing performances from the Diamond Sutra Factory Workshop.

March 14, 20:00
The Equinox Ragweed Variations: The Vast Grey Area (The Congress of Glassolallia V)

March 21, 20:00
The Warp presents the final installments of the changing collection of interdisciplinary multi media performances based on the material and concept of glass, which has been the basis of the Warp’s annual winter production workshop dubbed The Diamond Sutra Factory Workshop. The project is inspired by its locations, The Ascher Diamond Factory and the Glasshouse of the Amstelpark. Now the project arrives at the Kunstkapel with eight projects have been developing side by side and every assembly of performed projects has been completely different. The event includes a concert of glass, reflective sounds and reverberating images.

Five distinct projects will be presented this evening which explore the mysteries of glass, light, optics, reflectiveness and the unique spaces of altarity which it conjures. The audio visual spatial installation which is the setting for all of these projects  is a result of an ongoing performance, The Glass Chain Correspondence by the October Collective which is created by exchanged drawings and correspondence by the participants. The result in the Kunstkapel is an arrangement of twenty nine glass sheets an array of glass objects and a mound of broken glass.

The Ensemble Todo Modo (Alan Purves, Dirk Bruinsma, Robbert van Hulzen, Frank Rosaly, Tristan Renfrow  and Christian Smith) will perform a set of Glassolallias, music made entirely by invented glass instruments instruments as well as common household objects of glass. The ensemble will also perform another work Obscryations developing a different approach towards the glass.

The Supernumeraries (Maria Mavridou, Stefania Petroula and Astarti Athanasiadou) will perform a movement piece, Death Note Shard.

The Afterwords Searchparty (Lise Brenner and Anthony Murrell) will contribute an audio visual experience The Minutaie: The Sharpening Motes, involving the text of The Diamond Sutra.

From its Refractive Index, Surface to Volume will show new sections arranged by Andreas Tegnander, exploring the genesis of glass insects, flora and fauna and its sonic environs

The Paraneural Record will perform Glassary of the Scrying Light with one section conducted by Alan Purves which will explore the occult practice of scying through the reverberations in the glass.

The Equinox Ragweed Variations: The Vast Grey Area – March 21, 20:00
The final event of Winter Diamond Sutra Factory Workshop will occur one week later on the Vernal Equinox at the Kunstkapel, entitled The Equinox Ragweed Variations: The Vast Grey Area. All of the eight participating group projects present a new variation on their work while confronting on the one hand, the moment of equivalence that occurs on the equinox, as well as the emergence of an all encompassing grey. Grey glass, grey matter, grey scales.
